HFO 1234ze is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional refrigerants in air-cooled and water-cooled chillers. Mainly used for supermarkets and commercial buildings, as well as in other medium-temperature applications such as heat pumps, refrigerators, vending machines, and CO2 cascade systems in commercial refrigeration.

R1234ze isomer
The refrigerant R1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-Tetrafluoroprop-1-ene, CF3CH = CHF) belongs to the HFO family of refrigerants, which contain a carbon-carbon double bond and are characterized by very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) values, typically less than one [2]. It should be noted that there are two isomers of R1234ze, R1234ze(Z) and R1234ze(E) (see Figure 1), with quite different thermophysical properties. R1234ze(Z) has a higher boiling point and a higher critical temperature than R1234ze(E), and also a volumetric refrigeration capacity approximately 50% lower than R1234ze(E). Therefore, R1234ze(Z) can primarily be used in specific applications such as high-temperature heat pumps, while R-1234ze(E), which is more similar to R134a in terms of operating conditions and compressor size, has the potential for a wider range of applications.
